Odds are
you've never met my mother. That's too bad. Think Betty
White with darker hair. My mom is one of the sweetest people
you'll ever meet and her cinnamon rolls, well, they are simply
life-changing. Trust me, she knows her way around a kitchen.
So here's my advice for you: hire more people like my
mom.
Now, I'm not talking about hiring a legion of septuagenarian
retirees to staff your stores. It's a little more complicated
than...

I've had the
unbelievable honor of working for two incredible companies in my
career: GSD&M and Chili's. In one week, I got to listen to two of
my heroes speak: Doug Brooks and Roy
Spence. It's rare that in one day, two icons speak on one stage
and captivate an audience in such a way that no ones leaves the
room they way they came in.
The 2009 People Report Conference on Mixing Money &
Meaning is one of few places where these two icons can come
together. It was this confer...

Gratis to the Workplace Bullying
Institute , a vignette from the Evil HR Guy - which is sort of
funny except that it illustrates the two things holding back a
recovery in this job market: Fear and Greed. Most economists,
investors or Warren Buffet will tell you that the financial markets
tend to operate in ways that don't always appear to make sense -
but you can count on the two human emotions just noted to be the
needles in the haystack, just about any time the markets pe...

There are millions of people on Twitter and everyone has their
own motive for being there. I love Twitter for many reasons.
It's a great hub of life on the social web; to pick up news,
trends, track your brand, meet new people, do research, and to
support just about any issue that matters to you personally.
I love staying connected to our People Report community, and
having a way to keep up with colleagues all over the map. But
the ONE thing I love the most about ...

During our recent People Report Workforce Symposium, more
famously known as Summer Camp , there were a lot of discussions
about how individuals and companies are faring and feeling, as they
come out of this unprecedented recession. I would describe
the mood as "timid optimism". It has been politically
incorrect to be openly upbeat for so long that most people either
have survivor's guilt, or they are still waiting for the other shoe
to drop. So when Chester E...

Every once in awhile I find myself on what I call the "comfort
zone plateau." I recently just jumped out of a comfort zone
plateau. Basically, I was working hard, extremely customer focused
and maximizing results. Many people would applaud this type of work
effort because it does produce amazing results, creates forward
progress and delivers high levels of customer satisfaction. At the
same time I wa...

Okay, so unemployment is at 10% and the economy has lost over 8
million jobs since this recession began. You don't have to be
an economist to know that this is, shall we say, less than
ideal. However, the untold story is that for those of us who
are fortunate enough to have jobs, life goes on… only with a longer
to-do list and the added stress that comes with it. There are
now fewer hands to help push that boulder up the mountain and we
all know that boulders don'...

As unemployment has risen over the past couple of years, we've
seen turnover fall to record lows. This really should come as
no surprise-it's basic economics: the supply of workers
increases as the demand for workers goes down. And when the
demand for workers is low and there is little competition among
employers for workers, wage growth is stagnant.
This, in a nutshell, is what we've just experienced. These
were a few of the effects of "The Great Recession."&...
