Limbs for Life: A Charity We Love to Love

20100205_Limbs_For Life.png"We're not asking for much... just an arm and a leg!"

Back in December, I posted a piece about the charities each of us here at People Report support.  One of them that I mentioned was the Limbs for Life Foundation.  At the core of Limbs for Life is the mission to see lives changed and restored.  They do this by providing prosthetics to people who otherwise would not be able to have one.  Hundreds of amputees around the world are helped each year by Limbs for Life.  It is truly a miracle to watch someone receive their prosthetic and be able to walk or pick up an object.  It is life altering for someone to be able to walk or run again or give someone a hug with both arms.

Prosthetics are not cheap.  Prostheses typically cost between $6,000 and $8,000 but can sometimes reach costs of $35,000 or even higher.  The kicker is that the cost of an artificial limb continues because artificial limbs are usually replaced every 3-4 years due to wear and tear. In addition, if the artificial limb has fit issues, the limb must be replaced within several months.  Think of a growing child and how often a limb would need to be replaced and it puts it into perspective.

One of the fantastic ways the Limbs for Life Foundation raises money and awareness of this need is their annual Limbs for Life Benefit.  This is the 9th fundraiser this year and the goal is to raise over $400,000 in one night which will help provide prosthetic care for more than 200 amputees.

The fun part is every year there is a theme associated with the benefit and this year it is the Roaring 20's!  Get your flapper dresses and gangster zoot-suits out…
